Erie County, Ohio

About the Erie County Republican Party

We are neighbors, volunteers, and leaders committed to conservative principles and a stronger Erie County.

Vivek Ramaswamy speaking at the Lincoln Day Dinner

The Erie County (Ohio) Republican Party is devoted to electing Republican candidates to office at the local, state, and federal levels. Our organization is made up of a Central Committee and an Executive Committee. Together, these committees represent the registered Republicans of Erie County and conduct the governing business of the county party.

We serve communities across Erie County including Sandusky, Huron, Vermilion, Castalia, Milan, Berlin Heights, and Kelleys Island.

We are made up of volunteers and community members who share a commitment to lower taxes, safe neighborhoods, strong families, and the freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution.

Our Full History

In the 2008 Presidential Election, Erie County voted for the Democrat by nearly 14%. And in 2009, just one of Erie County’s eleven non-judicial countywide elected offices were held by Republicans: the county coroner.

In 2010, Republican Rick Jeffrey was elected Erie County Auditor by a razor-thin margin of just 7 votes, beginning the momentum that continues to this day. In 2016, Republican Matt Old flipped a county commission seat from blue to red. Steve Shoffner won another Democrat-held commission seat in 2018.

In 2020, Caleb Stidham was elected as Erie County’s first Republican Treasurer since 1952, defeating an incumbent Democrat. In 2024, Erie County Republicans defeated three incumbent county officeholders: the Engineer, Clerk of Courts, and Recorder. Additionally, Republicans won the Erie County Municipal Court’s judgeship in 2019 and the Sandusky Municipal Court’s judgeship in 2025.

President Trump won Erie County in 2016, 2020, and 2024, receiving a higher share of the vote here in each subsequent election. His 2024 margin of victory – over 14% – was the largest since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Today, Republicans control nine out of the county’s eleven non-judicial countywide elected offices – including all three county commission seats. None of this would have been possible without the sustained effort of all the individuals who give their time and money to build up our party.

The results of Republican leadership speak for themselves. In 2008, Erie County’s debt was $116 million. Thanks to the fiscally conservative leadership of county leaders, that debt is just over $40 million today, and it keeps being paid down further each year.

Erie County formed a Blue Ribbon Commission to identify ways to create efficiency in local government. Our Republican officeholders are committed to doing more with less and making the government live within its means.

Erie County has also utilized every method allowed by state law to provide property tax relief to its citizens. In recent years, our Republican officials have delivered more than $30 million in property tax relief, making Erie County a leader in Ohio.

The Erie County Republican Party will continue to defend our Republican-held offices and work to elect new Republicans, because as we’ve seen: Republican leadership works.
